RESOURCES TO AID WOMEN IN MINISTRY

I often hear from women that they do not know any female scholars as they are rarely assigned books by female scholars. There are many wonderful female scholars, so I have started a list as a way to introduce you to them (in no particular order). If you have more names that you would like to suggest for this list or if you see any errors, send me an email at [email protected]. I will be seeking to update this list regularly. I hope it goes without saying, but I will say it anyway, that just because I list someone does not mean I endorse them, their books, or their conclusions. The purpose of this list is to bring awareness to the many women in Christian academia. Even if we don’t always agree, surely there is something we can learn from one another.

**Notes:
(1)   In this document, “Strict complementarian” refers to a belief that women are precluded from all teaching and/or exercising authority over men in the home, church, and society and should not be ordained as senior pastors or ordained at all (e.g., CBMW/Piper/Grudem. Baptist complementarians are different than Anglican complementarians, however). “Soft complementarian” refers to a belief that women are precluded from the senior pastor role and are to submit to their husband (e.g. Keller, Alsup), but there is disagreement about ordination and preaching/teaching. Many labels are used here, but by and large this group wants to see more freedom for women in ministry than typically in strict complementarianism. “Evangelical Egalitarian” refers to a belief that the genders are distinct in their gifting, but that men and women are meant to be equal partners in the home, church, and society (e.g. Fee, Keener, Bruce). Therefore, women can be pastors, preach and teach to mixed audiences, and be ordained. I know these labels are debated and often not helpful, especially “soft complementarian,” but I’ve used them for the sake of communication and organization.
